Photo Etching Weekend 29th & 30th June

£165.00

Date: Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th June

Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm both days

Tutor: Lynn Bailey

This course focuses on a process invented by Keith Howard a pioneer of non toxic printmaking. This process is not actually etching into the metal plate by simple etched into a light sensitive photo polymer applied to metal plates. The process uses a delicate light sensitive film invented for the manufacture of electronic circuit boards to capture an image which we can then print in a variety of ways in a fine art context. The finished print can give a similar result to an etching or aquatint but can incorporate hand drawn images, photographic images and the shapes of real objects.

What does this course cover:

  • Course participants will be introduced to the workshop and gain a good insight into printmaking in general. We will use the printing presses and oil-based inks.

  • You will learn how to ink up an intaglio plate and develop some colour printing techniques.

  • The first day will focus on understanding the process - it involves several steps each of which must be followed carefully.

  • You will be encouraged to start by experimenting with test plates in order to explore the potential for the process.

  • It is possible to make a couple of finished images over two days.

  • “Photo” refers to how you apply the image onto the printing plate using a light source. The use of photographic imagery as a starting point is optional. Transparencies can also be drawn, painted, and montaged with acetates and actual small objects. The creative work comes in combining materials and in pushing the boundaries of this unique process.

  • The learning ethos will be one of individual development and self-directed exploration, with the encouragement of Lynn Bailey, a practicing artist printmaker, and other class participants.

  • Help and inspiration will be given throughout the weekend to enable development and further creative printmaking.

  • We aim for it to be fun, relaxed, supportive and encouraging.

Materials and Equipment:

  • General shared tools and equipment are provided on the course.

  • Having your own craft knife and drawing kit can be an advantage.

  • The process utilises images drawn or photocopied onto a transparent substrate such as acetate or film. The images need to be high contrast…. so bring photocopies on acetate of favourite images and photos plus textures and small objects that have a degree of transparency.

  • We stock a range of printing papers, however you are also welcome to bring in your own if you wish.

  • The only materials that you will be requested to pay for are the photopolymer film, papers you use and a £2 donation for the ink.

  • A typical materials bill may be £5-10 in total.
