What does this course cover:

  • Course participants will be introduced to the workshop and gain a good insight into screenprint. The course explores a cut paper and photo stencil techniques. The day starts with an introduction to screenprint and a hands on group activity using cut paper stencils.

  • The tutor will then come along side each participant before embarking on their own project. Each participant will be given an appropriate first step to get started and will then be able to get back to each for their next small step. There will be an allocation of one screen for cut paper stencils and use of 3 photo screens which will have stock images on them.

  • Participants will be introduced to printing papers, screenprint inks and how to build up an image using layers of colour. Being only one day, expect to only print 2 or 3 layers of colour.

  • The learning ethos will be one of individual development and self-directed exploration, with the encouragement of a practising artist printmaker and other class participants. Help and inspiration will be given throughout the day to enable development and further creative printmaking. We aim for it to be fun, relaxed, supportive and encouraging.

  • General shared tools and equipment are provided on the course.

  • Having your own craft knife and drawing kit can be an advantage.

  • Your course fee includes the cost of the screens, ink and paper.

What could this course lead to?

  • This course can be a standalone course or part of a self-directed series of short courses.

  • This course also offers a good introduction to screenprinting and could easily be followed by enrolling on to one of our 10 week developmental courses. Please note – there is only space for one or two people to be engaged with screenprinting at the same time on mixed printmaking courses. It would be helpful if you were open to exploring other printmaking options on ten week terms.

  • If you would like to practice your screenprint skills further, we also have a screenprint weekend, plus the Improvers Evening class is an option. We also have a 5 week Screenprint course.

  • If you also have some knowledge of Photoshop, you could consider our Screen to Screen course where you would learn more about developing your artwork through photoshop for screenprinting. Once you are reasonably confident in your printmaking skills, you can be considered for membership. Double Elephant has two levels of membership - see website for details.

Location: Screenprint Studio, First Floor, Exeter Phoenix, EX4 3LS
