The Observatory and Think… Art

11-18th June, 2017

The Observatory: perspectives on landscape, society and spirit, was an exhibition on display at the University of Exeter between 11 – 18 June, 2017. Inviting Southwest artists to respond to key research themes at the University, the exhibition showcased selected works from those submitted and included work by Double Elephant artists Simon Ripley and Lynn Bailey.

In conjunction with the exhibition, on 17 June the university ran Think…Art, a free family fun day. Offering a variety of creative activities linked to learning about the University’s current areas of research, Double Elephant were invited to deliver a print workshop at the event. We invited the public to participate in creating two banners, with the aim of exploring their current perceived place in society and how they might like to be seen in the future. This encouraged interesting conversations around the judgments we make about ourselves and each other as the banner was filled with silhouettes throughout the day, before being hoisted aloft outside the forum.
