Freehand

Between 23 May and 5 July 2015, The Devon Guild of Craftsmen opened the collaborative exhibition, entitled ““Freehand”:http://www.crafts.org.uk/Events-(1)/Exhibition-freehand.aspx”. Based upon the theme of “freedom”, it consisted of work produced through a series of participatory projects, in partnership with a range of organisations through from 2014 til 2015.

Artists and makers worked with children and young people from mainstream schools, young people supported social services, young people with complex needs, older people living in supported communities, refugees and adults with learning difficulties. Among these organisations, Double Elephant worked with prisoners from HMP Dartmoor to contribute to a body of truly inspirational work.

The project illustrates the immeasurable value of hands-on making and expressive activity. Through this project we have connected with people who have little engagement with the arts and have assisted them to explore their creative abilities and gain new skills, either as a solitary or social activity, regardless of ability or circumstance.
