RAMM Local Arts Show Winners!

Posted on Wednesday 15th November, 2017

An exhibition of Dartmoor-inspired art by Double Elephant Print Workshop, winner of the Express & Echo Local Art Show 2017, starts at RAMM on Wednesday 13 December.

This year’s Local Art Show complements RAMM’s main winter exhibition, Dartmoor: A Wild and Wondrous Region. The exhibition traces artists’ portrayal of Dartmoor, once described as a dreary mountainous tract and later as the epitome of the picturesque.

Portfolio Holder for Economy and Culture, Cllr Rachel Sutton, said “Exeter City Council is delighted to be working with the Express & Echo to help recognise, reward and foster creativity in the city. With its Dartmoor theme, this year’s competition provides an opportunity to celebrate both Devon’s inspirational beauty and the creativity of its people. Alongside RAMM’s fantastic collections and the exhibition, Dartmoor: A Wild and Wondrous Region, the exhibition will show that Exeter’s vibrant cultural scene is a continuation of the county’s strong cultural heritage. I thank all participating artists: there was a wonderful diversity of media, styles and techniques in the work of the nine competing groups. I congratulate Double Elephant Print Workshop and look forward to seeing their work in the splendid surrounds of RAMM’s gallery”.

Double Elephant Print Workshop Business Director, Claire Binden, said “Double Elephant Print Workshop is delighted to have won the Express & Echo Local Art Show. Our Exeter-based print studio was established 20 years ago, so the chance to exhibit as part of RAMM’s Dartmoor-themed winter show makes a fitting end to 2017 & a terrific start to 2018, our 21st birthday.

“Over a third of our 100 members have submitted work for inclusion. Our members come from across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset & Dorset. At the very heart of our home county of Devon lies Dartmoor – the ‘wild & wondrous region’. Its high hills are visible from Exeter itself, tempting us beyond the city walls with cameras, sketchbooks & notepads. The landscape & life of the moor has inspired generations of artists & a beating life blood of creativity flows on through the years. Many of our members live on or near the Moor, so it’s no accident that we entered the Local Art Show with a strong collection of moorland images.

“Our artists look forward to showcasing the many skills & techniques of original printmaking to RAMM’s visitors – from etchings & drypoints to linocuts, screenprints, collagraphs, woodcuts & monotypes. Thank you for this opportunity to show you our Dartmoor inspired work.”
